4-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful collection, but missing some advanced technology
This CD contains a good number of Mucha's works (though I believe some of the color variations were left out) in an easy to view format. Personally, I don't care for the slideshow presentation, but the alphabetical and thumbnail listings are quite handy, and having relevant print information in the sidebar is quite nice.

I love the ease of point & click, but I was a little disappointed that a "detail" tool was not incorporated. The pictures are available only in the size that they appear on screen, and if your resolution is above 1024 x 768, they're going to appear very small. The ability to zoom in to examine the pieces closely is sorely missed. I also found the music annoying as it seemed to interfere with the smooth play of the introduction and the "slideshow," but that will vary by system (though I consider mine to be "faster" than most).

There is no "print" utility available on the CD, but you can obtain small, low res captures by using the "Print Scrn" button.

The price is steep, and unjustified considering it's a Macromedia presentation - not an advanced viewing application - however, it's worth the investment for the material it contains. Books of Mucha's work are equally pricey, but not as portable or easy to flip through.

5-0 out of 5 stars About the Hardcover Edition of this Book...
This book was first released in 1980 by Harmony Books and the quality of the illustrations here is superior to the later Random House Value Publishing release.

Red cloth over boards with gold print in a sewn binding; issued with dustjacket. 192 pp, 2.5 pounds. 163 color plates. After the images there is a 42 page catalogue raisonne which is certainly not as detailed as a catalogue raisonne found from an academic publisher, but which offers much helpful information.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Beautiful
A definite must for those who savor story over system. Nobilis builds a lovely world and then opens it to any sort of story you might want to run. It requires imagination and maturity, but the payoff is worth it.

The rules are a bit loose in terms of direct conflict and damage, but I have not found this to detract much from the these sorts of scenes. Rather they allow for more descriptive battles and the like, and allow non-physical characters to take a role in them as well.

All in all a well done book and *very* entertaining game.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not a game for everyone, brilliant none the less
If you are looking for a game with pages of Powers and weapon stats then this isnt the game for you. If you wish to wield influence, plot, scheme and manipulate reality then welcome!

This game requires a delecate touch both for players and referees but run well is a dream. It requires maturity but also a sense of humour, cunning but directness of action. Whilst the rules are simple (ish) there is skill in running and playing it well. A great game if you are able to lift yourself out of a hack and slash mentality.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant game, let your imagination free.
"Nobilis is a radically different role-play game and will not be for everyone, but personaly I think it is the best game I have refereed in sometime.

Some of the rules are a bit loose (like the disadvantage and damage system) but that does not really detract from the system, as it is only Max-Min'er that will complain over the disadvantage system and you can fudge the rest."

From the Thought Record of "David Allan Finch" Power of Imagination

3-0 out of 5 stars It's a good game, but it's no Amber RPG.
Advantages --- it's diceless. It sports a fast system. An interesting (albeit a bit too vague at times) concept, and character creation is fun, unique and forces you to pick disadvantages that will /affect/ in game play.

Disadvantages --- the system is clunky, and in the 1st edition (I hear Hogshead is revising for the second one, thank heavens) things aren't well defined at /all/.It's also a /VERY/ arguable system-- as I know from playing it.It's fun. It's a game of miracles and interesting social interactions. But it's by no way perfect.

If you're looking for a rugged system, chock full of character creation / roleplaying opportunities, with a more defined theme (and frankly) more interesting NPCs, try Amber Diceless RPG.Nobilis, as it stands, is good and quite innovative, but it's got some major issues also.

5-0 out of 5 stars You must buy this book...
Most fantasy role playing games can be traced back to one of the first or second generation games.

If you were lucky, they had a refinement of mechanics, or a depth of world that made them better than theircompetition.

If you were unlucky, they made things worse.

_Nobilis_ isdifferent. It is a brilliant system that evokes a world both grand andterrible. I've been buying and playing these games for the past twodecades, and this is easily the finest I've seen.

I didn't know I waswaiting for this. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful pictures
Beautiful pictures, I can't wait to use them.Unfortunately, the one picture I hoped to see wasn't in here, but they are lovely, just the same.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mucha Postcards
If you love Mucha's work and cannot afford to go out and buy posters, prints or delicious books then this is your answer. These cards can be used to frame or decoupage etc. They are beautiful and the detail and color are how they should be, I have seen others and they are washed out and the detail is not that good.

I received this quickly with no delays.

3-0 out of 5 stars Moderately grainy, but decent
The 24 cards are as follows: all 12 from Les Mois (The Months) - Mois artistique et litterare (1898); Topaze of the Precious Stones series; Femme a la Plume (Woman with a Quill); Le Crepuscule (Dusk); Fleur de cerisier (Cherry Blossom); Exposition de 1900 (Exhibition 1900); Dessin pour uneventail (Design for a Fan); L'enfance (Childhood); Dessin pour unprogramme (Design for a program); 4 Moet et Chandon Menus.

Overall, I wasdisappointed in the color clarity - Topaze and the Moet et Chandon menusseemed over-saturated and Fleur de cerisier seemed too light. All theprints are on the grainy side, as well - I would venture to say my colorprinter would do as well.I wouldn't say these cards are of framingquality, as I had originally hoped, but they are perfectly suited forsharing your love of Mucha with friends by mail.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exquisite detailed prints!

Excerpt: Alphonse Maria Mucha, first name from the Czech Alfons (24 July 1860 14 July 1939), was a Czech Art Nouveau painter and decorative artist, best known for his distinct style and his images of women. He produced many paintings, illustrations, advertisements, and designs. Alphonse Maria Mucha was born in the town of Ivanice, Moravia (today's region of the Czech Republic). Although his singing abilities allowed him to continue his education through high school in the Moravian capital of Brünn (today Brno), drawing had been his first love since childhood. He worked at decorative painting jobs in Moravia, mostly painting theatrical scenery. In 1879 he moved to Vienna to work for a leading Viennese theatrical design company, while informally furthering his artistic education. When a fire destroyed his employer's business in 1881 he returned to Moravia, to do freelance decorative and portrait painting. Count Karl Khuen of Mikulov hired Mucha to decorate Hruovany Emmahof Castle with murals, and was impressed enough that he agreed to sponsor Mucha's formal training at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts. Poster of Maude Adams as Joan of Arc, 1909Mucha moved to Paris in 1887, and continued his studies at Académie Julian and Académie Colarossi. In addition to his studies, he worked at producing magazine and advertising illustrations. Around Christmas 1894, Mucha happened to drop into a print shop where there was a sudden and unexpected need for a new advertising poster for a play starring Sarah Bernhardt, the most famous actress in Paris, at the Théâtre de la Renaissance on the Boulevard Saint-Martin. Mucha volunteered to produce a lithographed poster within two weeks, and on 1 January 1895, the advertisement for the play Gismonda by Victori... More: http://booksllc.net/?id=102989 ... Read more
