Book Description
Light, airy, rooms...clean-lined wooden furnishings...richly patterned rugs and fabrics in colors inspired by nature. William Morris was the first to champion the styles that remain quintessentially modern today. William Morris and the Arts and Crafts Home is both a profile of this innovative tastemaker and a lavishly illustrated guide to decorating with these ever-popular elements. Over 200 photographs capture the Arts and Crafts look, both in Morris's own residences as well as in contemporary homes where the classic Morris aesthetic of simple beauty prevails. Organized by element, chapters on the legendary patterned fabrics and wallpapers he designed, his artisan wooden furniture, curtains and carpets, ceramics and metalwork all serve to illustrate Morris's unique vision. Informative, engaging, and delightful to peruse, William Morris and the Arts and Crafts Home captures the beauty and simplicity of these influential designs. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Lovely details
If you appreciate anything to do with the Arts & Crafts movement, you'll really like this book -- even if you look only at the pictures. It's separated into sections on exteriors and gardens; interiors (architecture); decorative patterns (wallpapers and woven fabric); furniture; softer elements (curtains, rugs, carpets, etc.); finishing touches (ornament, tiles).

Each has plenty of detail: you see the overall effect (the entire wall of wallpaper) and the specific design (a zoom in on the wallpaper's design). Even if you care about only one element (you're into fabric for instance) you'll get plenty out of this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars For Lovers of Arts and Crafts Homes
William Morris changed people's attitudes towards architecture and interior decoration when Victorian excess was at it's height.I love the use of wood in an Arts and Crafts house. For others who feel this way, this book is a treat. At the back are two useful sections: Where to See Arts and Crafts Homes and a listing of Specialist Supplies for anyone renovating an Arts and Crafts Home.

If you are looking for ideas on what to do, it is not a bad book.If you are looking for patterns on designs, this is not the book for you. This book is just a collection of some of his work, which is not what I was looking for.

4-0 out of 5 stars small packages
This book has quality color reproductions covering a broad spectrum of Morris's work. I love it. However, I wish Phaidon had come out with the same book at a much larger scale in hardcover. The large book "WilliamMorris" edited by Linda Parry contains good visuals and a greatcollection of essays about him, so I would recommend that book instead ifyou are looking for something big and comprehensive. "Designs ofWilliam Morris" is very nice for the price, though, and makes a goodintroduction to his work.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Gardens of William Morris
I loved this book. It demonstrated for me the real "art" of gardening. William Morris was a clever and far sighted man who advocated staying within the parameters of nature and natural beauty when making gardens. He also perpetuated the "garden room" theme which hasbeen enormously popular since the eighteeth century. I refer to this bookcontinuously and strive to design and construct garden rooms in my owngarden which are as beautiful. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have for William Morris fans
Elizabeth Wilhide's superb "William Morris: Decor and Design" will be a real treat for William Morris fans.Wilhide combines dozens of sumptuous color photographs of Morris interiors with an overview of his life, his influences, and his artistic goals.I learned a number of interesting things about his personal background, such as:

- His beautiful wife Jane had a long affair with fellow artist Dante Gabriel Rossetti;
- In addition to his design work, he was such a respected poet that he was offered the poet laureateship of England once Tennyson had died;
- Many of his designs are still in active production today, more than a century after his death.

Morris shunned the effect the Industrial Revolution had had on the arts in England (and elsewhere) and proposed that hand-crafted art, furniture, wallpaper, and so on be the goal of an artists' cooperative he helped to found. He felt that art should be in every home and that it should be useful, beautiful to look at, and durable. This success of the cooperative produced the uncomfortable situation, for Morris, of having art be so beautifully and painstakingly produced by hand that, in the end, only the wealthy could afford it.

The photographs of Morris interiors, wallpaper designs, furniture, and more, are absolutely sumptuous, and Wilhide's well-informed and well-written text helps to expand our understanding of the whole of Morris' life.Highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a beautiful, must-have interior design book!
With its stunning photographs, reproduced in exceptional color, William Morris: Décor & Design is a fine interior design book that belongs on every coffee table. This book will surely win more appreciation for thediverse talents of the great designer when newcomers to Morris see thebreadth of his talents presented so beautifully. As a long-time admirer, Ihave many books about the 19th century designer, poet, fantasist, etc., butthis is one of my favorites, as well as one of the most complete books onhis design that I have seen. Photographs range from the interiors of housesand public buildings decorated by Morris for clients, to the homes heactually lived in. Insets show details of patterns, from wallpaper totapestry to upholstery fabric to curtains, as well as pages from hisilluminated books and the Morris & Co. catalog. Non-Morris interiorsare shown for comparison. A pictorial glossary of his most common patternscompletes the book. Further, the biography chapter is a good, comprehensiveintroduction to Morris, describing his forays into politics and literature,as well as his many efforts in all aspects of design. I recommend thisbeautifully designed book, a fitting tribute to Morris's own delight indesign, to any lover of beauty in art and design.

Book Description
Tolkien fans who long for more of the same delight that they get from The Lord of the Rings will find it in the writings of William Morris, for it was he who created the literary style that J. R. R. Tolkien brought to such perfection in his tales. As a young man writing to his future wife, Tolkien mentioned the inspiration he was receiving from Morris:

"Amongst other work I am trying to turn one of the short stories [of the Finnish Kalevala] . . . into a short story somewhat on the lines of Morris' romances with chunks of poetry in between."

Forty-six years later, Tolkien still remembered what he had learned from Morris:

"The Lord of the Rings was actually begun, as a separate thing, about 1937, and had reached the inn at Bree, before the shadow of the second war. . . . The Dead Marshes and the approaches to the Morannon owe something to Northern France after the Battle of the Somme. They owe more to William Morris and his Huns and Romans, as in The House of the Wolfings or The Roots of the Mountains."

As The Lord of the Rings was being written, Tolkien's close friend, C. S. Lewis, wrote that Morris provides his readers with a "pleasure so inexhaustible that after twenty or fifty years of reading they find it worked so deeply into all their emotions as to defy analysis." In words that could apply equally well to Tolkien, he said:

It is indeed, this matter-of-factness . . . which lends to all of Morris's stories their somber air of conviction. Other stories have only scenery; his have geography. He is not concerned with 'painting' landscapes; he tells you the lie of the land, and then you paint the landscapes for yourself. To a reader long fed on the almost botanical and entomological niceties of much modern fiction . . . the effect is at first very pale and cold, but also fresh and spacious. No mountains in literature are as far away as distant mountains in Morris. The world of his imagining is as windy, as tangible, as resonant and three dimensional, as that of Scott and Homer.

If you enjoy what Tolkien wrote about Aragorn, if you admire the bravery of the Riders of Rohan, if you long for more tales of adventure in a vast and unspoiled wilderness, and if you wish that Tolkien had more to say about the courage of women or about romances between men and women, then you will be delighted by these two marvelous tales from the pen of the gifted William Morris. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Story for Fantasy Fans
I was lucky enough to stumble across this book before the holidays, and promptly ordered it along with several other books that were influences to Tolkien. This book is the one I started with.It contains two stories, both of which are wonderfully written. They are written using an older form of English, but once you get used to the dialect you will become fully immersed in the story.

I gave this review 5-stars only because of how great the stories are.The formatting of this book is horrible. It is the size of a textbook with 2 columns per page.I think it would have been better using a standard paperback format, but this seems to be the only available edition out, so look past this and enjoy the amazing stories!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent bargain
This book is a fantastic buy!The Well Beyond The World's End is usually published in 2 volumes, so this edition includes the text of 3 books that would normally cost you about $42 if purchased separately.

The text is printed in two columns, as in a magazine. It's very readable and aesthetically pleasing (don't judge by the unfortunate cover). The only downside is that Morris originally published his books in an elaborate illuminated manuscript style (like http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Kelmscott_Press_-_The_Nature_of_Gothic_by_John_Ruskin_%28first_page%29.jpg).Unfortunately no modern printing of Morris seems to include his gorgeous original format. On the plus side, this edition is definitely more readable.

As for the stories themselves, I think it's fair to say Tolkien (and to a degree C.S. Lewis) retained every innovation Morris made, more or less replacing him. It's likely that only hardcore Tolkien/Lewis fans will find these books worth reading. This and the companion volume are the closest thing to the LOTR prequel.

The text is widely available free online (though it's not fun to read on a screen), so you might test a few pages before committing to a purchase:

3-0 out of 5 stars Some nice projects
I was fairly warned by the other reviews, but I bought this book anyway because I really like William Morris. There are a couple of very nice projects that I might actually do, but not nearly as many as I was hoping for in a book of this size. I am probably going to buy a book from Dover of Morris' designs and chart my own. These just wouldn't be up to Morris' standards. You should also know that many of these projects are tiny. So tiny that if you saw them stitched, you might not recognize them as William Morris patterns. I think most stitchers looking at this book are hoping for some large, lovely, tapestry-like patterns. Look somewhere else if that's what you're hoping for.

5-0 out of 5 stars A brilliant interpretation of William Morris's Work
Barbara Hammet has created a wonderful tribute to William Morris in this work. For those unfamiliar with William Morris, she provides a work biography of the master artist. Though short, she gives examples of his work, and explanation of his background. Once this is explained, she launches into the rest of the book, where she offers more than 40 charts that are Hammet's interpretations of Morris' style. Pillows, bell pulls, small motifs, wall hangings, broaches, bookmarks, and even a full alphabet are some of the items she offers. She even gives the design and instructions for a 3-D treasure box! There are small motifs in a few colors, or larger items in less than 4 colors which would be very well suited to the beginning stitcher and many things that are large and complex for the experienced stitcher.

Another reviewer said these are poor examples of William Morris's work. I must disagree. These items are beautiful, and they are Barbara Hammet's art she BASED on William Morris. Still, any of these finished works would be the perfect compliment to Morris's art.

Because of the wide variety of skill levels and project scales I would highly recommend this book to any level of cross stitcher. Even those needle artists not interested in Morris might find a few projects they find enjoyable in this diverse volume. Hammet does offer instructions for finishing the projects and a few basic cross stitch instructions, but I would recommend purchasing the Cross Stitcher's Bible in addition if you have NEVER cross stitched before, as you will probably need more instruction than is provided here.

Highest recommendations!

3-0 out of 5 stars William Morris cross stitch
I first purchased this book prior to hearing about Beth Russell. The projects in this book are relatively straightforward and attractive, however, they do veer off from what William Morris was really trying to accomplish (i.e. rich, medieval tapestry, etc..).Please compare to Beth Russell's interpreetation of W. M. I have made a couple of projects from the Barbara Hammett book, but in future, I will work on Beth Russell's William Morris interpretations which capture the Arts and Crafts essence alot better. Some of the skein counts in B. Hammett's book were inaccurate as well.

Overall, if you want a basic book on William Morris, without anything too complicated or costly, this book is for you.The materials for Barbara Hammett's projects average between the 20 and 30 dollar range per project.Beth Russell's book patterns average over 100 dollars since you have to buy costly wool and heavy duty top notch canvas.Still, there is no comparison between B. Hammett and B. Russell.Although I have enjoyed doing B. Hammett's projects, I will do B. Russell in future, despite the cost.B. Russell's projects are truly for heirloom quality keepsakes.

3-0 out of 5 stars I'm Having Reservation About This Book.
I just received this beautiful book in the mail. Several projects will look great in my American Arts and Crafts bungalow home. I have purchased the material for the Orange Bell Pull and found the materials information for the item inaccurate. Specifically, the fabric called for cannot be Sage Aida 16 count. When I placed all the skeins of floss against the fabric called for many colors washed right into the color of the fabric!
I find the book easy to view and very aesthetically pleasing to read. Howeveer, if this material information is any indicative of other corrections I need to problem solve I am going to be very upset as I spend time/money on projects only to be met with frustration caused me by an editor's oversite.
I will, therefore, remain hopeful and positive and continue to stitch! If a reader of this has done the Orange Bell Pull and would be interested in sharing their experience with me please email. drl34859_98@yahoo.com

5-0 out of 5 stars "Bookmarks" changed my life
If you're like me, you read a lot, but you have trouble remembering the precise page you were looking at when you set your book down. I respect my books too much to dog-ear the pages or lay the volume open, facedown, which can damage the spine. So for years I tried either to commit page numbers to memory, or to recall just where in the story I had left off. Both techniques were unreliable. Frequently, I would reread passages I had read before, or, worse, I would inadvertently skip ahead and find myself completely lost.
Then a good friend turned me on to the miracle of "bookmarks." These handy, decorative little strips of cardboard come in books of twelve, arranged in heavy, perforated sheets. To use one of them, all you do is gently separate it from its companions, place it between the pages of the book you're reading, and voilá! You'll never lose your place again.
For me, bookmarks have taken all the guesswork and embarrassment out of reading. They can do the same for you. ... Read more

Book Description
Internationally acclaimed for his compelling work in glass, William Morris approaches the demands of glassblowing and glass sculpting with an experimental eye and an innovative hand. Morris, who lives and works near Seattle, has collaborated with master glassblowers as well as renowned painters and sculptors in making art that is widely admired by artists, sought by collectors, and praised by critics. For him, glass is an endlessly intriguing material -- fragile yet timeless, preserving the spontaneity of the creative moment unlike any other medium.

In this strikingly handsome volume of recent work, Morris explores themes related to archaeology, animals, and the hunt. His Crows, Ravens, and Rhytons embody his intellectual interest in myth and ancient history, as well as his keenly intuitive understanding of the natural world. ... Read more

Book Description
For thousands of years humans have adorned themselves. Adornment figures among the constellation of traits that signify the arrival of modern human behavior in the archaeological record. Wherever they ventured, wherever they lived, people have made art and adornments to accompany them in life and death.

In this book, artist William Morris celebrates this ancient and universal human quality and continues his exploration of the themes of origin and myth that permeate all his work. At first glance, these glass sculptures signal a striking departure from Morris's oeuvre of canopic jars, animal vessels, assorted artifacts, and imaginative burial installations. Here Morris depicts the people only imagined before. He has put flesh on the bones, and covered the bodies with costumes, jewelry, headdresses, and tattoos. These figures spring forth full of vibrant life in the present, rather than recalling a distant past. The faces and artifacts evoke and sometimes blend elements of Africa, Asia, Oceania, and the Americas, tracing the global migrations of distant ancestors. Morris aims less for realism than for an essence of ethnicity.

For more than 20 years, in a career that has brought Morris to the forefront of the modern Studio Glass movement, he has perfected a repertoire of techniques that virtually no other American glass artist can equal. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars "Full Color" is a Misleading Description
There are 291 designs on this CD-ROM.The cover says it has "Full Color Electronic Designs."Of the 291 designs, only 40 are full color! Of those 40 color designs, about 10 look like they are scans of carpets. The rest are black and white graphics.Of the black and white, 24 are frames, 27 are pictures, & 200 are letters of the alphabet. Overall, you aren't getting what you pay for, even at the low Amazon price.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not For Everyone
All of Dover's books are beautiful. However, because the images are skewed, there is no repeat pattern.

5-0 out of 5 stars beautiful images which print very well
This book includes a selection of black & white picture frames in both narrow and wide styles. The narrow ones have turned out to be very useful for innermost frames of pictures and other images, then surrounded by color frames. I've even used the black & white picture images for hand-coloring. But the color images in this book are magnificent, and they print exactly as well as one would hope. This dover collection is a credit to them. ... Read more

Book Description
"Beauty, which is what is meant by art...is no mere accident to human life, which people can take or leave as they choose, but a positive necessity of life."—William Morris

William Morris, the leader of the British Arts and Crafts movement, was a man of tremendous energies, his accomplishments astonishing in their range and depth. He became successively a poet, embroiderer, pattern designer, calligrapher, dyer, weaver, translator, architectural preservationist, socialist, and book publisher and printer. As the head of the internationally successful Morris & Company, he devoted himself to the decorative arts.

Drawing upon The Huntington's superb holdings—the largest collection of Morris material in North America—this book examines the life and work of the designer and of Morris & Company. It contains detailed studies of Morris's stained glass, interior decoration designs, and book publishing ventures, as well as an essay on his successor at Morris & Company, J. H. Dearle. The book also explores the design legacy of Morris and the firm in the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries on both sides of the Atlantic.

Diane Waggoner, curator of the exhibition at The Huntington, is a specialist in nineteenth-century art and has written about the photography of Lewis Carroll. The contributors include Pat Kirkham, Professor of Design History at the Bard Graduate Center for Studies in the Decorative Arts, Design, and Culture; Gillian Naylor, professor emerita at the Royal College of Art and an expert on the Arts and Crafts movement; and Edward R. Bosley, director of the Gamble House in Pasadena, California. 120 illustrations, 80 in color. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Well Written Biography
Fiona MacCarthy's background is in design, which brings a lovely perspective to her biography of Morris.MacCarthy also writes well, which is a plus in a book this size. She writes with affection for her subject, but without any of the bizarre idolatry with which some people approachMorris. He was a crashing bore as a poet, a mere amateur painter, a giftedfabric designer (but there are many gifted fabric designers), and aSocialist who knew only marginally more about what people actually do for aliving than did Ruskin.Nevertheless, Morris was a volcano of artisticactivity and heart-felt social ideas, and therein lay his genius. MacCarthy does an excellent job bringing Morris's genius to life in thisfirst rate biography.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Final Biography on Morris
Most books about William Morris are like rainbows, filled with colorful images. Simply because he made so many wonderful and colorful embroideries, tapestries and patterns, and because color itself is something people like, and therefore buy.

This book doesn't have many colors inside, but itcontains many black and white photographs, that are of great interest forthose who like to read about William Morris and his time. And thecombination of text and photographs create so many images in your mind, that you forget about color.

For the same people, this is the the finalbook about William Morris and his life. It's not the book to buy, if youwant to know all about his printing of books in Kelmscott Press (there youhave to go for Peterson's books), but it's the book about all the otherstuff you want to know about Morris - and everything, you didn't know, youwould want to know.

Having spent more than 5 years on this matter, FionaMacCarthy has succeeded in making an extraordinary and therefore the finalbiography on William Morris.

More than 700 pages with more than 100pages of source and reference notes.

It's a book to read and to readagain and to use, when you're working with text about the period, the arts& crafts movement - or simply with Morris. Buy it, even if you don'thave the money - wear the old jacket another year. You won't regret.

Aslong as it's out of print, you have to go to the library, where you shouldtell them to order some more books, so they print more. ... Read more
