Product Description
Few artists of the nineteenth century created works as subtly evocative, as socially poignant, and as artistically influential as Jean-Francois Millet did. This book examines Millet's technical and creative achievement, focusing on his rarely seen pastels, watercolors, and drawings, and considering them as independent works of art, as procedural steps toward paintings, and as important elements in his finished pictures. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars stunning book
I first found this book at the bookshop of the Clark Museum (where the exhibit had been held). The reproductions both in color and black and white were amazing, and the text intelligent and informative. The price was prohibitive.I looked on Amazon, and found a used copy in excellent condition for literally 1/2 the price. This is a gorgeous book, a treasure!Jean Francois Millet was a marvelous artist, and his work was influential and inspirational to Vincent van Gogh.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice book, but the selection of works is limited
This book is a catalogue for an exhibition that was held at the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute in Williamstown, Massachusetts. The reproductions do not represent the full work of Millet but rather the selection of works that was presented in that exhibition. There are many reproductions of drawings, pastels and watercolors, and only a few paintings. Many of the drawings are preparations for larger scale paintings. I bought the book after a visit to the Musee d'Orsay in Paris and was disappointed not to find many paintings that I remember from that visit - not even "The Angelus", which is probably Millet's most famous work.Still there is a large number of beautiful drawings and paintings, and the introductory text is interesting. I wish the reproductions would be larger - there are only about ten full page reproductions throughout the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very pleased with the quality of the book
This is the first quality pyblication I have found on Millet. While I was looking for more of a coffe table type book of his paintings, I was slighlty disappointed that many of his works were not included but thehistory of his life more than makes up for it. ... Read more

Product Description
In The Habitual Peacefulness of Gruchy, David Middleton celebrates the artist Jean-François Millet’s sympathetic realism depicting the harsh life of French peasants in the nineteenth century and honoring their essential human dignity. Millet referred to some ofhis drawings as Epopée des champs, "the epic of the fields." Here, Middleton follows Millet, picture by picture, in taking a lowly pastoral theme and elevating it to epic and tragedy. Middleton seeks to describe Gruchy—the small Norman village near Cherbourg where Millet grew up—and explore that rural world in relation to the American South and his own career as a Louisiana poet. A deep affirmation of the agrarian way of life, Middleton’s poems are an implicit critique of the postagrarian world entering its final stages of decay.

Reading The Habitual Peacefulness of Gruchy is like walking through a series of galleries of paintings, each poem a translation from one art form to the other.

The painting is unfinished, rightly so,For it depicts what never has an end:A fat hog on her haunches pushed and drawnOut of the barn to this small walled-in place,

Two men pulling a rope tied round the snout,And a woman coaxing, showing the beastA bucket’s tilted lip of slop and corn,November’s emblem, bleak with our bleak need.

The hog has caught the scent of other hogsOn the butcher’s stained apron and she squeals So near the slaughter-board, the primal scene,The long knife and the basin for the blood.

Huddled and wrapped against a wall and cold,Two ghostly children—charcoal, not pastel—Appalled yet famished, fix on death and ham, This open abattoir, hunger’s great I AM.—"Killing the Hog, ca. 1867–70" ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Poetry for Poets in the Most Crafted Art
David Middleton's THE HABITUAL PEACEFULNESS OF GRUCHY should be read by every poet. I read this book of poetry traveling by train from London and could not have had a better companion. The oblique afternoon light of early spring set just the right ambient through the window as the triple landscape passed by: that viewed through the train window, that internal one from Middleton's exquisite poetic ekphrases and Millet's remembered original scenes set in a similar light. This is mature poetry of the most crafted art where not a word is out of place. In Arcadian subtlety reminding me of the Idylls of Theocritus but with a profound sense of calm, like the Barbizon milieu the painter Millet evoked in his work, Middleton's poems quietly establish nature as a Muse not indifferent to her children, whether they they be cowherds or farmgirls with geese or the animals themselves, all very much tied to a rich earth under a humbling broad sky.All of Middleton's poems have a loveliness in the last few lines full of reflective climax and sheer delight of surprise. One of my favorite poems in this book, "Faggot Gatherers on the Edge of Fontainbleau Forest", ends with a note on a miracle of Christ, seeing the men carrying heavy loads of sticks on bent backs: "Not as mere subjects for his craft but souls / Bearing the common burdens of this earth /He thought of one whose eyes, when half-repaired / By miracle, had seen men walk like trees."How could the climax of a poem be better than this, connecting without fanfare to the miraculous in the last lines ? This kind of elevation is rarely experienced in poetry. I am recommending this gem of a book to all my students. ... Read more

Product Description
In their images of mid-19th century France, Meryon and Millet looked to the pre-industrial sections of Paris and its environs for inspiration. The featured works by Meryon draw heavily from scenes of French city life of the period and offer architectural perspectives of Parisian landmarks, while Millet's prints are primarily rural in nature, inspired by his upbringing in the country. The publication includes a description of the etching process, reflections on Paris during the artists' lives, a catalogue of the exhibition, and analyses of several featured works. ... Read more
