Ward Mumford Elihu Vedder is generally grouped with such American painters as William Rimmer and Albert Pinkham Ryder (1847-1917), who are categorized as symbolist, visionary, or fantasy painters. The New York City-born Vedder was engaging in surrealistic and allegorical themes such as his famous Questioner of the Sphinx and The Lair of the Sea Serpent as early as the 1860s, more than twenty years before the European symbolists were at work. After settling in Rome in 1866, Vedder's works became more stylized, incorporating a sinuous linearity that anticipated the English Aesthetic Movement. While in London early in his career, he also came under the influence of the Pre-Raphaelites. Although not adhering to their "truth to nature" dictum, Vedder did ascribe to their tight drawing style. Vedder's naturalistic style, often combined with mysterious and religious themes, persisted throughout his life. In his later years he developed several subjects based on biblical themes. He gave up easel painting after 1900 in order to work on his autobiography, Digressions of V. Written for His Own Fun and That of His Friends

    Extractions: For most of his career the American painter, Elihu Vedder, lived and worked in Europe, and like Whistler or Sargent he is in many ways as much a European as an American artist. He first visited Italy in 1857, when he was twenty one and studied in Florence under Raffaelle Bonaiuti. In 1866 he returned, married, to settle in Rome and remained based in Italy for the rest of his life, with a house on Capri as well as a home in Rome itself. He became a member of the large international circle of artists living and working in Rome, painting historical and religious subjects at first, but developing his own distinctive brand of Symbolist allegory. He was also a prolific landscape painter, working with Giovanni Costa and the 'Etruscans', including William Blake Richmond. From these landscape artists he took a love of low horizontal compositions that appear in his work in other genres. He visited England frequently, was much interested in the Pre-Raphaelite movement, becoming a friend of Simeon Solomon, with whose work his own has affinities. On his first visit to London in 1870 he met Watts and admired the work of Rossetti, Alma-Tadema and Leighton. Vedder's work has a power of evocation which is reminiscent of the symbolist artist Odilon Redon.

    Extractions: VEDDER, ELIHU (1836- ), American artist, was born in New York City on the 26th of February 1836. He studied under the genre and historical painter Tompkins H. Matteson (1813-1884), at Sherburne, N.Y., later under Picot, in Paris, and then, in 1857-61, in Italy. After 1867 he lived in Rome, making occasional visits to America. He was elected to full membership in the National Academy of Design, New York, in 1865. He devoted himself to the painting of genre pictures, which, however, attracted only modest attention until the publication, in 1884, of his illustrations to the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam; these immediately gave him a high place in the art world. Important decorative work came later, notably the painting symbolizing the art of the city of Rome, in the Walker Art Gallery of Bowdoin College, Maine, and the five lunettes (in the entrance hall) symbolical of government, VEDETTE—VEGA CARPIO and the mosaic " Minerva" in the Congressional Library at Washington. Among his better-known pictures are: "Lair of the Sea Serpent," in the Boston Museum of Fine Arts; " Young Marsyas," " Cumaean Sibyl," "• Nausicaa," in the collection of J Pierpont Morgan; and " Genii and Fisherman," in the collection of Martin Brimmer, Boston.

    Extractions: ABSTRACT. Omar Khayyam was both an astronomer and a poet. We examine the astronomical references in different translations of his poetry and in Elihu Vedder's illustrations of the first American edition of Edward Fitzgerald's famous translation as the takeoff points for discussing the controversy as to the meaning of his poetry and the differences in culture between 11th-century Iran where he wrote them and 19th-century Britain and America where Fitzgerald and Vedder respectively were born. Coming from a society in which science and religion are viewed as antagonists, Fitzgerald misconstrued Omar’s poetry as a materialist diatribe against religious belief. Like all great poetry, Omar’s verse is so deep and so rich in meaning that it can be understood on many different levels and in different ways. Thus, many people from atheists to Christian clerics, from materialists to mystics, have professed that Omar is one of them. Speaking as an astronomer, I can say without fear of contradiction, that Omar was definitely "one of us." For that reason it is appropriate for this meeting to take a look at the astronomical allusions in his poetry and compare how their interpretation is affected by cultural context. I here focus on the literary translations of the Iranian-American scholar Ahmad Saidi (1991) and the British poet Edward Fitzgerald and the artistic interpretations of the American artist Elihu Vedder who illustrated the first American edition of the Rubaiyat (Fitzgerald 1884). Given the location of this conference, I should mention that Vedder executed his illustrations during his lengthy stay in Italy in the early 1880’s. My research has also been informed by reviewing a number of literal translations, notably those of Graves and Ali-Shah (1967) and Arberry (1952).
