The villages are mostly situated at some distance from the sea; for the island suffered from pirates. Even in the early part of the igth century sentinels stood on duty night and day, and at a signal of alarm the whole population, including the Turkish aga himself, used to hide in the woods. For a description of the island and its remains of antiquity, see A. Conze, Reise auf den Inseln des thrakischen Meeres (Hanover, 1860); for inscriptions see Inscr. Gr. xii. 8; the island is fully described by J. ff. Baker-Penoyre in Journal Hell. Stud. xxix. (1909). THATCH (O.E. thaec; the word is common to many Teutonic languages in the sense of " roof," " cover "; cf. Du. dak, Ger. Dach; from Du. dekken comes " deck"; the Indo-European root is stag, whence Gr. ffreyos, roof, Lat. tegere, to cover; the French equivalent is chaume), the material employed sometimes for roofs in the place of tiles or slates; it consists of wheat straw, of which several layers are required, to the depth of from 12 to 14 in., or even extending to 18 in. Unthreshed straw is said to last from twenty-five to thirty years, and is easily repaired. In Norfolk the reeds of marshland are employed, and they constitute a durable thatch lasting from thirty to forty years or more. Thatched roofs are not now allowed in London or other towns and their vicinity, but if saturated with a solution of lime the thatch is said to be incombustible. It forms an extremely g_pod roof, warm in winter and cool in summer.

Abbott Thayer: The Nature of Art "A bbott Thayer: The Nature of Art," a major exhibition celebrating the 150th anniversary of the birth of Abbott Handerson Thayer (1849-1921), opened April 23, 1999 at the Smithsonian's Museum of American Art. The exhibition the first in 30 years to examine the work of this influential figure in 19th-century American art, famous for his images of angels and his eccentric personality runs through Sept. 6, 1999. Tipper Gore, wife of Vice President Al Gore, is Honorary Patron for this exhibition. The official Washington residence of the vice president was built in 1893 and since the Gores moved in has been decorated with art and photography from America's Gilded Age. "The Gilded Age is one of my favorite periods," said Mrs. Gore. "Living in a Victorian home built in that period has given me deeper appreciation for Thayer and his contemporaries." "Angel" (1887), one of the most popular paintings in the permanent collection of the Museum of American Art, is a highlight of the exhibition. It appeared on the cover of TIME magazine's December 27, 1993, issue. "Caritas" (1894-95), an important early image rarely seen outside the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, is also featured among the 61 works in the show.

    Extractions: Thayer's surviving still lifes describe the essentials of a flower in a bowl or on a table, and are filled with subtle colors and the diffused light made popular by French impressionists. These works appear to be quickly and easily painted, and the fluid application of paint suggests a very different process than the more painstaking approach he used for his angels and ideal figures, which often took years to complete. From his earliest attempts at painting, Thayer was drawn to animals and nature, finding subjects in the forests and streams of New England. His careful observation of nature and thorough academic training in the laws of color and values led him to study how animals use natural camouflage to conceal themselves from predators. With his son Gerald, he published his theories as Concealing-Coloration in the Animal Kingdom Thayer claimed that nature camouflaged animals by placing their darkest colors on their backs to counter the sunlight falling upon them, and their lightest colors closest to the dark ground. The fractured outlines and patterns, mimicking native habitats, would cause the animal to disappear when placed against the appropriate background. The book drew considerable criticism, particularly from President Theodore Roosevelt, also an amateur naturalist. Roosevelt and others rejected Thayer's argument that the purpose of all animal coloration, no matter how conspicuous, was for the purpose of concealment. Some of Thayer's ideas were applied to camouflage during World War I.

Roosevelt, September3, 1917, concerning camouflage for war vehicles. Thayer advises Roosevelt that he has been studying the "principles of Concealing Coloration for nearly a quarter of a century.... I entreat you to believe me that only a picked board of artists, and the more scientific ones, at that, are at all competent to test any scheme. ...I had learned by experiment that it took the brightest white on vertical surfaces to match the horizon sky in cloudy weather, which predominates 95% to 98% of the the time in the 'war zone'."
