He pursued architectural studies at the Technische Hochschule in Darmstadt, Germany, from 1909 to 1914, when the outbreak of World War I precipitated his return to Russia. In 1916, he received a diploma in engineering and architecture from the Riga Technological University. Lissitzky and Kazimir Malevich were invited by Marc Chagall to join the faculty of the Vitebsk Popular Art School in 1919; there Lissitzky taught architecture and graphics. That same year, he executed his first Proun (an acronym in Russian for project for the affirmation of the new) and formed part of the Unovis group. In 1920, he became a member of Inkhuk (Institute for Artistic Culture) in Moscow and designed his bookPro dva kvadrata. The following year, he taught at Vkhutemas with Vladimir Tatlin and joined the Constructivist group. The Constructivists exhibited at the Erste russische Kunstausstellung designed by Lissitzky at the Galerie van Diemen in Berlin in 1922. En cambio, sus experimentos en los campos de la fotografía, el foto-montaje, el diseño gráfico y de exposiciones, a finales de los años 20 y durante la década de los 30, es todavía un motivo de controversia ente los especialistas y un aspecto prácticamente desconocido para el público más amplio. Bajo el título El Lissitzky: Más allá del Gabinete Abstracto, 1930-1941, se mostrarán los trabajos multi-media de Lissitzky, con obras realizadas entre 1920 (cuando Lissitzky comenzó a diseñar el Gabinete Abstracto), hasta 1941 (año en que murió, en Moscú), dedicando especial atención a su intensa colaboración con fotógrafos, diseñadores y realizadores de cine alemanes y soviéticos, y a la influencia que éstos ejercieron sobre su obra. Extractions: Lazar Markovich Lissitzky is widely known as a Russian avant-garde artist who made significant contributions to abstract art in the 1920s. Until now his experiments with photography, photomontage, and graphic and exhibition designs in the 1920s and throughout the 1930s have not been documented and thoroughly analyzed. This book explores both the political and aesthetic aspects of Lissitzkys late multimedia work from his designs for the Abstract Cabinet to his death in 1941. The author and the two contributors give special attention to Lissitzkys intense collaboration first with German and then with Soviet photographers, designers, and filmmakers, and they discuss how his various personal friendships and acquaintances influenced the directions he took in photography and design. The book presents photographic works by Lissitzky and these other artists as well as some of Lissitzkys early non-objective art that foreshadows his experiments in figurative art. It also includes Lissitzkys correspondence with his Western colleagues and his wife Sophie Kueppers. This book will accompany an exhibition of Lissitzkys photographic works at the Sprengel Museum in Hannover, Germany, Museu dArt Contemporani de Barcelona, and Fondaçao de Serralves, Porto.

Het wordt tijd dat iemand aantoont dat er een verband was - of niet! - tussen deze progressieve avantgardistische kunstenaars en de anarchistische beweging in Rusland. Van een andere orde zijn schrijvers als Paustovski, Babel, Sjklovski, Alexandrov, en Tsvetajeva; eveneens uit het begin van de 20e eeuw. Sjklovski 's "Zoo of brieven niet over liefde" is even experimenteel als de poèma's van Majakovski, doch minder bekend. Deze auteurs beschrijven deels episodes uit de Russische Revolutie en noemen regelmatig Nestor Machno.
