For painting he left his wife and children and quit his profitable post of clerk. Gauguin was full of inner contradictions and complicated in his behaviour. His life was filled with arduous work, militant commitments at the expense of his friends, chimerical dreaming, short-lived happiness, the painful and glorious satisfaction of a man who knows that he has defined his own freedom, that he is animated by a spirit that cannot be taken from him. In quest for different life Gauguin went in 1891 to Tahiti. He spent there his last years, which were both very difficult and very happy. From this period of his life descend artist's most famous works. Paul Gauguin was the Post-Impressionist, but his simple brushwork and intensely contrastive colours largely retain the Impressionist approach to three-dimensionality through shadow, patches of light and an extensive use of green.

Hierdoor verhuist het gezin regelmatig en verblijft onder andere vier jaar in Peru. In 1855 keert het gezin terug naar Parijs. Gauguin wordt voor zijn opleiding naar een internaat in Orléans gestuurd. In 1873 trouwt Gauguin met Mette Sophie Gad. Ze krijgen samen vijf kinderen. Gauguin is een succesvol effectenhandelaar. Hij en zijn gezin leiden dan ook een luxueus leven. In 1874 leert hij Camille Pisarro kennen. Pisarro introduceert hem in de wereld van de schilderkunst. Gaugain ontpopt zich tot kunstverzamelaar en amateur-schilder. Niet veel later neemt hij zelf deel aan een impressionistische tentoonstelling. Noodgedwongen gaat hij bij zijn ouders in Rouen wonen. Hij volgt zijn gezin nog wel naar Denemarken, het geboorteland van Mette, in 1884. In Kopenhagen krijgt hij zijn eerste solo-tentoonstelling, maar verder is zijn bezoek aan Denemarken geen succes. In de jaren die volgen reist Gauguin veel. In Pont-Avon, Bretagne, voegt hij zich bij een leefgemeenschap van een groep kunstenaars. Later gaat hij naar Parijs en vervolgens naar Panama en Martinique.

It was there he experienced his first Impressionists' exhibit that captivated him and confirmed his desire to become a painter. In 1883 the stock market crashed and he abandoned his business career and family, while frequently moving from one place to another, living on little money, and devoting himself to painting entirely. His early work showed little promise and people laughed at him. From then his life was a crescendo of increasing bitterness at the world which rejected his art, for he realized that he was producing paintings of unparalleled strength and beauty.

After spending a short period with Vincent van Gogh in Arles (1888), Gauguin increasingly abandoned imitative art for expressiveness through colour. From 1891 he lived and worked in Tahiti and elsewhere in the South Pacific. His masterpieces include the early Vision After the Sermon (1888) and Where Do We Come From? What Are We? Where Are We Going? Although his main achievements were to lie elsewhere, Gauguin was, to use a fanciful metaphor, nursed in the bosom of Impressionism . His attitudes to art were deeply influenced by his experience of its first exhibition, and he himself participated in those of 1880, 1881 and 1882. The son of a French journalist and a Peruvian Creole, whose mother had been a writer and a follower of Saint-Simon, he was brought up in Lima, joined the merchant navy in 1865, and in 1872 began a successful career as a stockbroker in Paris.
